Wound Care Certification Eligibility Requirements for Nurse Practitioners
The wound care certification examination and credentials are provided by a national inter-disciplinary certifying board for healthcare professionals involved in wound care. Nurse Practitioners who have three or more years of clinical wound care experience are eligible to take the national wound certification examination. The test fee for the wound certification examination is $575 (this fee is not included in the price of the course).
Our Nurse Practitioner Wound Care Certification Course provides Nurse Practitioners with the fundamental knowledge needed to prepare for national board certification in wound care management.
The Nurse Practitioner Wound Care Certification Course curriculum is designed by certified, highly experienced wound care specialists, offering access to the most current, accurate information, technologies, and best practices. This course is part of our Advanced Wound Care Certification education.
We recommend that Nurse Practitioners use this course to achieve accredited wound care certification through the CWS wound care certification or the CWCN certification.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best wound care certification for a nurse practitioner?
Most NPs choose between the CWS® (ABWM) and the WCC® (NAWCO). Both are accredited. The CWS® exam emphasizes etiology-based clinical reasoning and is structured for senior clinicians; the WCC® is open to a broader range of disciplines and is widely recognized in long-term care and home health. The right choice usually depends on which credential your employer or wound clinic recognizes. Additionally, make sure you know about the difference between accredited and unaccredited wound certifications.
Can a nurse practitioner take the CWSP®?
No. The CWSP® is restricted by ABWM to licensed physicians (MDs, DOs, DPMs) and is not open to nurse practitioners. NPs seeking an advanced ABWM credential take the CWS® wound care certification exam instead. Learn more about the difference in certification for Physicians, NPs, and PAs.
How much wound care experience do I need to sit for the CWS® as an NP?
ABWM requires at least three cumulative years of wound care experience as a licensed clinician. The three years do not need to be consecutive, and wound care does not need to have been your primary role. NPs without three years of experience may apply through ABWM’s CWS® Candidate pathway.
How long does it take an NP to prepare for the CWS® exam?
Most NP candidates spend three to six months preparing, depending on prior wound care exposure and weekly study hours. NPs with active wound care practice often prepare on the shorter end of that range.
Will the CWS® or WCC® count toward my NP recertification CE?
Continuing education hours from accredited wound care prep courses count toward most NP recertification CE requirements, but the specific rules depend on your certifying board (AANP, ANCC, or specialty board) and your state. Check your recertification board’s published CE rules before counting hours.
